The best-selling author of five green living books and (literally) thousands of other articles, and a HuffingtonPost blogger, I’ve been called “the foremost expert on green living” by Body & Soul magazine. Others call me the “godmother of green.” I bring over 20 years of experience as a writer and editor about the connections between the environment, personal health and well-being. With an expert eye for hidden pollutants (honed by my own experience with chemical poisoning), I work to offer us a healthy and timeless way of life that is in harmony with the earth.

I am the founder and CEO of TerraSpheres.com, a site for connecting the spheres of consciousness, community and global transformation. I also edit GreenChiCafe.com, a site that reflects my more personal world of green and spiritual living—www.greenchicafe.com—a site that I started with my daughter, Lily.

Since the summer of 2010 I’ve co-authored a blog called Spiritual Solutions with Deepak Chopra.

Currently I am the editor-in-chief of thewellnesswire.com.

My first book, Clean and Green (1990-) was a bestseller, reflecting the needs of a world hungry for healthy, non-toxic alternatives to everyday products. Since then, I have written The Green Kitchen Handbook (1996), Better Basics for the Home (Three Rivers Press, 1999), and Home Enlightenment (Rodale 2005), a comprehensive guide to establishing a naturally, healthy sanctuary within your home. My latest book is True Food (National Geographic, 2010) and was the winner of Gourmand Awards Best Health and Nutrition Cookbook in the World. I field over 100 media requests a year and am a frequent speaker at national and regional conferences; many of the events are keynotes.

From 1999- 2008 I was the executive editor of the Healthy & Green Living part of Care2.com, one of the largest online sites in the green space. Prior to that I was the founding editor of two green magazines – one of which, The Green Guide, was bought by National Geographic.

Product Description

This inviting, encouraging how-to turns the ideals of today’s food revolution into eight practical steps to a healthier, more natural diet. It’s a workable blueprint for enlightening your kitchen in ways that are good for you, your family, your pocketbook—and the environment. Friendly and fun, featuring lighthearted design and lively writing, the book shows how preparing good food with simple, natural ingredients can actually cost less than reaching for commercially produced and processed alternatives. You’ll discover fresh, seasonal recipes and new ways to go shopping, plus practical advice on how to establish priorities among the many rules that sometimes seem to contradict each other. How can I eat fresh fruit in the middle of winter? If favor local produce, do I have to stop eating bananas? Full of quick, innovative solutions (and a few old-fashioned ones, too), True Food is a complete vision of how to select, prepare, serve, store, and enjoy the planet’s bounteous harvest.

The eight steps introduce and implement a short list of powerful ideas, from “Eat Local Food” to “Green Your Kitchen.” Every piece of advice is backed up by solid research and personal experience. Stories of real people who have committed to the lifestyle offer amusing tales of acquiring new habits and inspiring portraits of people who quietly live with a new awareness. Special sidebars called “Budget Benefits” highlight how following these eight simple steps can actually save you money—and at the same time help you nourish better and greener attitudes everywhere.

Amazon.com Review
These days, more and more people are saying no to “better living through chemistry” and yes to a lifestyle that is less toxic and more environmentally friendly. This trend toward a more natural lifestyle has become something of a crusade for Annie Berthold-Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home. After developing hypersensitivity to even very low concentrations of chemicals, Berthold-Bond was forced to rid her life of as many toxins as possible. “It wasn’t until I had to be away from chemicals that I began to realize how many we lived with. The extent of the contamination is startling–from hair spray and floor wax to dandelion killers and plastic shower curtains and other products that line our hardware stores and supermarket shelves.”

This book represents the culmination of her search for a more sustainable lifestyle. Taking her cue from an earlier time, Berthold-Bond, former editor in chief of Green Alternatives for Health and Environment, offers more than 800 simple and practical alternatives to common household toxins, covering everything from skin care to gardening. And the good news is that adopting her suggestions and formulas isn’t hard at all. “Mixing up face creams or wood stain isn’t much different than cleaning the windows with vinegar, soap, and water instead of using Brand Name X, or making a cake with flour, eggs and milk instead of buying a mix,” see asserts. “With a few simple staples we can clean our houses, wash our hair, rid the dog’s bed of fleas, and do many other things as well.” If you have your doubts, here is her formula for metal polish:

3 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon flour, and enough white distilled vinegar to make a paste. Scoop the paste onto a clean sponge, and polish the metal clean. Rinse with hot water and buff dry.

Sure, these days it’s literally impossible to lead a life that is completely toxin-free. But you can significantly reduce your exposure, and picking up a copy Better Basics for the Home is a great way to get started.
